  TRUFFLE TIME
There’s nothing like the prospect of a treasure hunt to get you out of bed on a winter’s morning. Especially when you could be joining a Highlands truffle hunt to witness the dig for black gold. Sam Appel and John Phizacklea of Robertson Truffles are making their debut on the truffle scene this season (see our story on page 46) and they’re keen to make their tours memorable. So sign up for one (robertsontruffles.com.au) or join a local wine tour or experience operator who also does truffles (see pages 54 & 116). If you’d prefer to dine rather than dig, The Loch at Berrima is holding its annual seven course fungi feast on Sunday August 5 (theloch.net.au).

THE PIES
WHAT’S ON
The second annual Pie Time
eat fest hits the Highlands this
month. More than 30 local bakers
and restaurants will be cooking
up delicious dog’s eyes (pies), and
Destination Southern Highlands will be
offering up a tasty schedule of pie related events
throughout the month. For more details, visit pietime.com.au or
turn to page 114. As an aperitif, here are a few of our favourite pie creations that will feature: The Sweet Whatman (apple, raspberry and frangipani) named after Don Bradman’s maternal uncles
and available at Stumps Cafe, Bradman Museum, Bowral. The Shaggylicious (slow cooked beef cheek and smoked pork) at The Shaggy Cow, Mittagong. Pie Noon (mushroom and tarragon) served at the Bundanoon Guest House, Bundanoon. From Moo to You (braised beef) at Moss Vale Livestock Exchange on Wednesdays (sale days). Banga & Curry (sausage, potato, onion, pea and curry) from Falls Cafe, Fitzroy Falls. And one last thing... Do you want dead horse (sauce) with yours? June 1-30; pietime.com.au
   TALLY HO
If you’re proficient at horse riding and looking for a way to ride like the wind and get your blood – and your steed’s – pumping, get in touch with the Sydney Hunt Club. This group of hunting enthusiasts has been part of the Southern Highlands’ rural tapestry since the 19th century, and rides out with hounds during winter on dozens of private properties here and in the neighbouring Southern Tablelands. Be aware, of course, in hunting with hounds there is generally a fox involved, and one person’s vixen is another’s vermin. sydneyhuntclub.com.au
SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
‘A Night in Vienna’ summons up glamorous images of snow lined streets, Imperial palaces and coat clad Austrians (never mind its currently summer in the northern hemisphere). The Southern Highlands Symphony Orchestra is importing a dose of European musical glamour with its A Night in Vienna concert gala events, which include Viennese music such as Mozart’s
Flute and Harp Concerto. Soloist Judith Rough will perform many famous Viennese songs. Go to southernhighlandssymphonyorchestra.com for more details and to buy tickets.
